I just had a patient tell me he was afraid he was damaging his eyes because he reads too much. This is one of the more common myths that I hear. I always encourage my patients to ask questions and if in doubt come in to get an exam to make sure you are ok.
Everyone over 40 years of age, needs a regular exam to rule out disease at least every two years and more often if there is a family or personal history of eye problems. Your eyes don't wear out like tires. Reading too much can cause eye fatigue and headaches but no damage can occur to the eyeball itself. Of course, this is assuming you don't have some active eye disease which is going untreated like a serious infection or inflammation. If you had active disease, the reading might cause the disease to worsen and do damage but not the reading itself.
This patient thinks he can read too much and damage his healthy eyes. No this can't happen. If your eyes feel tired then take a rest but damage will not occur if you don't stop. Headaches but not damage. These patients cannot destroy their eyes by reading too much.So if you don't have headaches and feel ok, you can read to your hearts content without fear of damage. The eyes are not like tires that wear out from too much use. Of course, always use common sense and if your vision is bad are there is severe pain or irritation see your ophthalmologist.
Otherwise, read until you drop.
