Is Lasik Right For You? Health and Fitness : Eyes
Vision
The typical patient who has refractive surgery has considered doing it for at least 2 years and sometimes 5 years or more before they actually schedule their surgery. The "right time" is when they are ready. I always tell my patients "you are ready when you are ready". If you make up your mind to have LASIK after much thought and consideration and mentally are prepared you will do much better. It can't be because I said it is time or your sister, husband, mother, father or whoever said you should do it.
Choosing your surgeon is usually after someone you know or trust has made a recommendation. If you then go to meet that surgeon and have a screening and you like him and his staff and all your questions are answered satisfactorily, you will probably be ready to go. The cost of surgery varies, but most surgeons are good surgeons and the cost does not determine how well you will do after surgery. You have to be comfortable with your surgeon and what his fees are and the cost will not matter after that.
This surgery is highly successful but no one is going to give guarantees because this is surgery. You are not going to go blind from this surgery, but you will need to sign a very detailed informed consent form. In medicine, we are required to give informed consent. If airlines had to give the kind of informed consent we do a lot less people would fly. My advice is to look at the videos as an educational tool to tell you what to expect so that you will be realistic in your goals.
Basically, LASIK will reduce your dependency on glasses or contacts. There may be some instance where people have to wear glasses depending on age and job requirements. Bottom line is you will be happy with your surgery if you have realistic expectations and "you are ready". Enjoy your new vision.
