Mississippi
has been highlighted recently for being the most obese state in America. The recent news from
Mississippi
concerns a controversial bill in the legislature to force restaurants to refuse
to serve obese people. The bill failed to even be considered as it was killed
in committee. The idea of telling people they can't eat because they are already
too obese is foolish. The idea of encouraging people to lose weight and become
healthier is not foolish. As a physician, I see firsthand the damage that
obesity can cause to our health and our enjoyment of life. It increases our
heath costs tremendously. There is another more positive program to highlight
which has been promoted in Mississippi to combat the
obesity and which deserves the type of publicity that this ill conceived bill
attracted to our state. The Let's Go Walking Mississippi campaign is
something everyone in our state can be proud of. I have been a resident of
Mississippi
since 1979 and there have been many positive changes that have occurred during
the last 29 years. Mississippi has its share of problems but
certainly no more so than other states which all have their problems. There are
many distinguished educators, athletes, musicians, actors, politicians,
physicians, authors, artists, and outstanding individuals from all walks of life
who hail from Mississippi. This program is being promoted heavily in
the Mississippi media statewide and has been fully
supported by Governor Haley Barbour and his wife Marsha. If you want to see more
